Converter's tiny externals minimise footprint & cost
Suitable for applications with input sources ranging from a single-cell Li-Ion to automotive inputs, Linear Technology has introduced the LT8580. The current mode, fixed frequency step-up DC/DC converter features an internal 1A, 65V switch and can be configured as either a boost, SEPIC or an inverting converter.
Operating from an input voltage range of 2.55 to 40V, the converter features programmable switching frequency. The switching frequency can be programmed between 200kHz and 1.5MHz, via a single resistor or synchronised to an external clock. With this capability, the size of external components is minimised. This capability, along with the converter's 3x3mm DFN-8 package (or MSOP-8E), ensure a small footprint and a reduction in cost.
The LT8580’s low VCESAT switch, which is 0.4V at 0.75A, delivers efficiencies of up to 86%. For optimal system performance, undervoltage lockout is user adjustable. Other features include external synchronisation capability, internal soft-start and thermal shutdown protection.
The converter is priced at $2.35 and sold in 1,000 piece quantities. Industrial and high temperature versions of the converters are also available. The LT8580IDD and the LT8580IMS8E, which operate from -40 to +125°C, are priced at $2.59 and sold in 1,000 piece quantities. The LT8580HDD and the LT8580HMS8E, which operate from -40 to +150°C, are priced at $2.84 and sold in 1,000 piece quantities.
