Expanding its InnoSwitch IC family, Power Integrations has added a constant power version of the switching technology which combines primary, secondary and feedback circuits in a single surface-mounted off-line flyback switcher IC.

The off-line CV/CC flyback switching ICs have a constant power output profile. Pairing the profile with an adaptive-voltage protocol, such as Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0 or USB-PD, optimizes charging times in devices to capitalise on the benefits of adaptive charging technology, i.e. faster charge times and improved charging efficiency. Thermal management and battery charging system cost is minimised, says the company, while backward compatibility is maintained with the 5V USB BC 1.2 specification.

The company’s FluxLink technology performs secondary-side control, implemented with a low component count. It is also claimed to optimise the effectiveness of output synchronous rectification, for high efficiency across the full load range. For example, no-load consumption at 230V AC is less than 10mW, while full-load efficiency exceeds 90%.

By providing a constant power output, the IC allows battery-operated devices to draw up to the maximum power of the charger at any selected output voltage, for shorter charge times, more device availability and a simplified accessory supply chain, says the company.

Protection features include over-voltage protection, output over-current protection with 3V auto restart, hysteretic thermal shutdown and line input over-voltage protection with brown-in/brown-out thresholds.

The ICs meet 100% production HIPOT compliance testing equivalent to 6kV DC/1 sec; reinforced insulation; and isolation voltage testing to above 3,500V AC. They are UL1577 and TUV (EN60950) safety approved and EN61000-4-8 (100 A/m) and EN61000-4-9 (1000 A/m) compliant.

There are two devices available. The INN2214K IC delivers 15W output power for universal voltage chargers and adapters and the INN2215K delivers up to 22W.

Samples are available now.

InnoSwitch-CP devices meet all global energy efficiency regulations and join the existing InnoSwitch-CH and InnoSwitch-EP IC families.
