AC/DC converter IC features integrated PFC control
Integrating Power Factor Correction (PFC) and Quasi-Resonant (QR) controllers into a single package, the BM1C001F is a high-efficiency AC/DC converter from ROHM Semiconductor. Suitable for 100W-class equipment such as TVs and industrial power supplies, ROHM claims that the converter IC is the first to incorporate an ON/OFF setting function and new PFC output control method within the PFC controller.
The PFC functionality improves conversion efficiency during light loads while reducing standby power consumption, while the new proprietary PFC output control method significantly increases the efficiency of boost converter operation in 100V AC systems. When utilised in power supplies, the AC/DC converter IC ensures compliance with Energy Star 6.0 (the latest international energy standard) with 89% efficiency at 100V AC and 89.5% efficiency at 230V AC.
Additioanlly, integrating the PFC and QR controllers in a single package reduces the part count by 20% compared with conventional solutions which make use of an external PFC circuit. Adopting the BM1C001F in 100W class power supplies results in a standby power of less than 85mW at 100VAC and 190mW at 230VAC, clearing the latest Energy Star standard which requires 210mW or less. The BM1C001F operates over a temperature range from -40 to +105°C.
Energy efficiency is increasily important in order to improve energy savings in electronic devices of all types. But with equipment over 75W, a PFC controller is required to control harmonics. However, this may have a negative effect on efficiency. Power supply adapters are currently progressing in 100W-class equipment such as large LCD TVs, which reduce design and evaluation loads while enabling easy repair. But these conventional solutions combine an AC/DC converter with built-in QR controller with a separate PFC circuit, possibly presenting problems in regard to board space and power supply size.
The BM1C001F is available now in an SOP18 package with dimensions of 11.20x7.80x2.01mm.
