AnalogicTech Optimizes Power Management for Small Form Factor Backlit Screens

Advanced Analogic Technologies, Inc. today introduced the AAT282X active matrix thin film transistor (TFT) liquid crystal display (LCD) DC/DC converter family that includes a WLED driver and VCOM buffer to enable the delivery of a fully integrated power solution for portable backlit displays. Key target applications include automotive displays, digital photo frames, netbooks, e-readers and handheld GPS navigation devices.
“Portable displays have unique and challenging requirements for implementation into consumer products and must be able to deliver long battery life, better power efficiency and strong power regulation,” said Ray Chan, technical marketing manager of Analogic Tech. “This part was designed with these requirements in mind and offers a variety of flexible and efficient solutions to accommodate backlighting active matrix TFT LCD screens ranging from 5 inches to 10 inches in size, delivering a clear competitive advantage to portable device manufacturers.”



Part of AnalogicTech’s integrated Panel Power solutions family, the AAT282X uses internal, low power, positive and negative charge pumps for higher efficiencies, lower ripples and tighter regulations to generate 30V symmetrical VGH and VGL voltages. With operation down to 2.5V, the AAT282X boost converter architecture is ideal for a wide variety of portable backlit display devices.



The AAT2822 flagship device includes a triple-output DC-to-DC converter for powering the column and row gate drivers, a 28V WLED backlight driver, and a VCOM buffer for distributing the mid-scale refer¬ence voltage across the display. Depending on the display requirements, the AAT282X family offers additional affordable solutions that remove features such as the VCOM buffer and backlight options, offering design flexibility to accommodate any unique features required by a specific display design.



To minimize board space requirements, all products within the AAT282X family are offered in a compact, 4mm x 4mm Pb-free TQFN package. The complete solution itself fits within a footprint of 30mm x 21mm when incorporating the optional evaluation board.
