2,500V power amplifier suits power supply & ATE applications
Using a highly reliable cascaded architecture, Apex Microtechnology has introduced a power amplifier that meets the power supply and test equipment markets' demand for higher voltage amplifiers with a small form factor. The PA99 is capable of operating on a maximum voltage supply of 2500V and provides output voltages beyond 2400VPP.
When starting development of this hybrid, Apex design engineers considered new topologies that utilise level shifting and optical de-coupling of the input and output stages in order to optimise power consumption and to enable implementation of high voltage MOSFETs for the output stage. But this approach proved to be limiting, both in terms of the amplifier’s performance and the loads types suitable for use with the amplifier, as well as limiting the overall drive circuitry. As a result, the design team opted to work with a proven cascaded architecture and did so while maintaining a small product form factor.
In terms of output current delivery, the PA99 can provide 50mA of continuous current as long as the SOA is monitored for thermal conditions. The PA99 includes current limiting as well temperature monitoring, which is provided through a temperature sensing diode. Under typical operating conditions, the PA99 can achieve slew rates of +25V/µs (rising edge) and -35/µs (falling edge).
The PA99 is packaged in a 12-pin hermetically sealed PowerDIP package that was developed in cooperation with an existing supplier. The hermeticity allows for the cavity of the package to be filled with an inert gas, thus reducing the required package height and component spacing inside the package. The PowerDIP package also enables efficient cooling of the amplifier when operating in conditions where power loss within the device is significant. The overall result is a space-saving footprint measuring just 40.64x93.98mm (1.6x3.7”).
Jens Eltze, Strategic Marketing Manager, Apex, commented: “Customer input in the product development process is highly valued at Apex Microtechnology and the PA99 is proof that this philosophy delivers results. Our customers gave us a challenge by demonstrating the higher voltage performance needs of their products which drove the validation of the PA99’s amplifier design concept and assured us of its market acceptance.”
Sample units of the PA99 are available now, with production volumes targeted for Q3. Unit pricing will be $635.00 in quantities of 100. Apex also provides matching heatsinks, thermal washers and an evaluation kit.
