100 million random moves for rotary micro stage with integral controller
New Scale Technologies has significantly increased the lifetime specification for its M3-RS-U Rotary Smart Stage, a precision rotary micro stage with embedded controller. The new specification of 100 million random positions underscores the utility of these compact, all-in-one motion modules for integrating embedded motion inside in medical, commercial and industrial instruments.
“These precision rotary smart stages are proven to make great products smaller, with the built-in controller supporting easy integration and fast time to market,” said New Scale CEO David Henderson. “The increased lifetime specification makes the selection decision even easier for product designers who need to embed motion in their portable and hand-held systems.”
The new lifetime specification is based on performance testing in which standard M3-RS-U Rotary Smart Stages achieved more than 160 million random positions within two billion degrees of total rotation.
Test conditions included a moment of inertia load of 4g-mm2 on a horizontal axis, more than four times the typical load presented by the standard mirror used for beam steering.
Applications
M3-RS-U Rotary Smart Stages are ideal for beam steering and mirror positioning applications where precise, point-to-point positioning or dynamic scanning up to 100Hz is needed.
Applications include medical instruments such as surgical lasers and fluorescence microscopes, industrial systems for 3D measurements and remote sensing, optical communications systems, and obstacle detection and tracking systems for robots and drones (UAVs).
Specifications
The M3-RS-U Smart Stage is less than 12mm in diameter including the controller. It features continuous 360 degree rotation at up to 1100 degrees per second with accuracy of 0.25 degrees. An internal absolute position sensor has 0.025 degree closed-loop angular resolution. The micro stage holds position with zero power and no jitter.
Availability
M3-RS-U Rotary Smart Stage developer’s kits are available now from New Scale Technologies. One- and two-axis mirror positioning and beam steering developer’s kits are available at Digi-Key and Mouser.
M3 Micro-Mechatronic Module Technology
New Scale’s M3 Smart Modules incorporate patented piezoelectric Squiggle micro motors, position sensors, drive electronics, firmware and patented control technologies in miniature housings with precision bearings, slides and other mechanisms.
The internal controller operates on 3.3VDC and connects directly with a system processor. They enable designers to embed precision motion in handheld, portable and battery-powered instruments with fastest time to market and lowest total cost.
