Single device offers greater protection than multiple
Protecting consumer electronics from damage caused by ESD and other scenarios that can lead to safety and warranty concerns, the PolyZen YC series of protection devices has been released by TE Connectivity. In a compact 4.0x5.0x1.2mm package, the PolyZen ZEN056V230A16YC and ZEN056V260A16YC combine a precision Zener diode and a resettable PolySwitch Polymer Positive Temperature Coefficient (PPTC) device.
To enable rapid heat transfer, the Zener diode is thermally connected to the PPTC device, which increases the reaction time. This allows a single hybrid PolyZen YC component to simultaneously protect against damage from overvoltage, overcurrent, reverse-bias, ESD and overtemperature scenarios more effectively than solutions using multiple devices.
Providing up to 2.6A hold-current at room temperature, the ZEN056V230A16YC and ZEN056V260A16YC are suitable for enhancing reliability in sensitive electronics. To meet IEC 61000-4-2 and IEC 61000-4-5 standards, the PolyZen YC devices offer ±30kV ESD protection and overvoltage protection for an 8 or 20ms pulse at 150A. Increased protection capabilities over typical discrete approaches that use fuses or PPTC, transient voltage suppression or overvoltage protection devices, are provided by the one PolyZen YC component.
The ZEN056V230A16YC and ZEN056V260A16YC are suitable for tablets, set-top boxes, hard disk drives and DC power ports.
“As an integrated protection solution, PolyZen YC devices help enable single-component implementation, with all the advantages of more efficient production optimised for SMT lines, reduced board space, lower parts costs and faster time-to-market,” commented Jin Xu, Product Manager, TE Circuit Protection. “In addition to their space-saving advantages, they provide high-performance protection to help designers comply with the IEC safety requirements.”
