Alpha and Omega Semiconductor (AOS) has announced the release of its AOZ1390DI-01 and AOZ1390DI-02 ideal diode protection switches.

These new devices are particularly suited for multi-port Type-C Power Delivery (PD) 3.0 applications, capable of sinking up to 100W of power, making them ideal for high-performance laptops, personal computers, monitors, docking stations, and other USB Type-C port applications.

Designed to improve the efficiency and safety of USB Type-C connections, the AOZ1390DI includes a Limited Power Source (LPS) function. For multi-port parallel power applications, the LPSB pin of the AOZ1390DI can be linked to the DISB pin of other AOZ1390DI devices across different ports. This LPS feature acts as a watchdog, automatically disabling a port if another port in the same system becomes faulty or damaged. This prevents excess power flow from a damaged port, making the AOZ1390DI an optimal solution for multi-port Type-C PD applications.

The AOZ1390DI boasts advanced features that significantly reduce voltage drop and power loss compared to traditional designs. The device offers Ideal Diode True Reverse Current Blocking (IDTRCB) protection, which blocks unwanted reverse current from VOUT to VIN. Additionally, the integrated back-to-back MOSFET offers the industry’s lowest ON resistance and highest Safe Operating Area (SOA), enabling it to handle high currents and a broad range of output capacitances on VOUT.

With an input operating voltage range of 3.3V to 23V, the AOZ1390DI supports up to 8A of current and has a 30V maximum rating for both VIN and VOUT terminals. An internal soft-start mechanism controls inrush current from high capacitive loads, with the option to adjust the slew rate via an external capacitor. The device also includes extensive protection features such as Input Under-Voltage Lockout (UVLO), Input Over-Voltage Protection (OVP), and thermal and short-circuit protections signalled by the FLTB pin.

“With our AOZ1390DI ideal diode protection switches, designers can implement simple, efficient, and safe USB Type-C PD3.0 Standard Power Range (SPR) current sinking applications up to 100W,” said Starry Tsai, Senior Director of Product Marketing of Power IC Product Line at AOS. “With our unique Limited Power Source (LPS) feature, the reliable and safe design of systems with multiple Type C Ports is simplified. At the same time, AOS’ high SOA, low RDS(on) trench back-back MOSFETs enable an industry-leading low resistance, reducing the power dissipation in the system and enabling good thermal design.”

The AOZ1390DI is available in two variants: the AOZ1390DI-01 automatically restarts once fault conditions are resolved, while the AOZ1390DI-02 latches the power switch off, requiring either the EN or power to be reset to restart the device.
