Expanding its Grasshopper3 USB3 Vision camera line, Point Grey has announced the addition of 3.2 and 5MP CMOS models which feature Sony's 2nd gen Pregius global shutter CMOS sensors. The IMX250 and IMX252 sensors set new benchmarks for global shutter CMOS imaging performance by dramatically reducing pixel size and significantly lowering temporal dark noise.

The smaller 3.45µm pixel size allows more pixels to be packed into a smaller optical format, allowing a wider variety of more compact and lower-cost lenses to be used.

The Grasshopper3 GS3-U3-32S4M-C model is based on the monochrome version of the 1/1.8" Sony IMX252 global shutter CMOS sensor, which features 2048x1536 image resolution and runs at 121fps. The Grasshopper3 GS3-U3-51S5M-C model is based on the monochrome version of the 2/3" Sony IMX250 global shutter CMOS sensor, which features 2448x2048 image resolution and runs at 75fps.

The Grasshopper3 GS3-U3-32S4M-C is list priced at $975/€735 and the Grasshopper3 GS3-U3-51S5M-C is list priced at $1425/€1095. Both models are available to order now from Point Grey, its network of distributors and the online store (for North American, EU and Australian customers). Colour models are scheduled to be released in Q4 2015.
