RGB sensor optimises mobile & TV display resolution

Optimising the display resolution and colour quality of mobile devices and TVs to deliver ultra crisp display contrast and consistent brightness in all lighting environments, Intersil have released the ISL29125 digital light sensor. The company claims that this is the industry's most accurate, lowest power and smallest Red, Green and Blue (RGB) sensor.

In order to provide consumers with a more crisp and colour consistent experience while extending battery life, the sensor can directly communicate with a device's core processor to enable the automatic adjustment of display brightness based on changing light conditions. As well as TV and mobile displays, the ISL29125 RGB sensor is suitable for many other applications in which the highest level of colour temperature measurement accuracy is required, including industrial colour printers, thermostat displays and water quality testing devices.

When integrated into a TV display, the ISL29125 effectively adjusts the brightness and colour consistency of the display as the lighting conditions in a room changes. Especially useful in OLED display TV applications, the ISL29125 can be used to adjust the blue organic material ageing profile to maintain consistent contrast and brightness throughout the life of the display.

In mobile displays which frequently move from one environment to another, lighting conditions invariably change and can affect the clarity and brightness of the device display. This can often make the display very difficult to read and use. Integrating robust on-chip IR filtering technology, the RGB sensor features a minimum of ±35% field of view at 50% light intensity. This eliminates these display fluctuations, whether in an incandescent lit classroom, an LED lit store or outdoors in direct sunlight. Working in cooperation with the device's core processor, the ISL29125 continuously adjusts the lux range and ensures that the display maintains consistent perceived colour and the ideal brightness level, based on the current lighting environment.

Operating over a voltage range from 2.25-3.63V, the ISL29125 consumes just 85uA in active mode and less than 0.5uA in power down mode. With a dynamic range from 5.7mlux to 10klux, the ISL29125 allows the display brightness to adjust in low- to high-lit environments. This prevents unnecessary power consumption to prolong battery life. The RGB sensor's unique lux range select feature enables designers to program the lux range for optimised counts/lux based on the device's requirements. Measuring just 1.65x1.65x0.75mm, the RGB sensor greatly minimises the size of the hole required in device designs to allow sufficient light through for accurate colour measurement, thus improving overall industrial design. Additionally, the digital light sensor can effectively filter out the colour of the device when measuring the light colour temperature, enabling manufacturers to offer a variety of device colour options for consumers.

Available now in 6-lead optical co-packages, the ISL29125 is priced at $1.12 (USD) each in 1,000 unit quantities. Intersil also offer the ISL29125EVAL1Z evaluation board for $99.00 (USD) each.
