Polymer fibre optic cable addresses challenging environments

To address challenging environment applications, a 1mm core polymer fibre optic cable with a reinforced jacket incorporating aramid tension members, has been released by OMC. Compared to standard polymer fibre, the cable provides more resistance to crush and abrasion. 

Longitudinal stretching, which causes damage to terminated ends if cables are pulled or dragged during installation or use, is prevented by the aramid tension members. The cable is offered in a Simplex version, which has a 5.0mm jacket diameter, and a Duplex version, which has a 2.2mm jacket diameter. 

William Heath, Commercial Director, OMC, said: “Polymer fibre is generally much more durable than glass and can be used with low cost transmitter and receiver devices. Therefore it is perfectly suited for a host of applications, including short distance datacomms; industrial and office networking; medical illumination and sensing; signs, signalling and lighting. The addition of a ruggedised jacket allows it to be specified, for the first time, in environments with even more challenging physical conditions.”
