Cold forged heatsink provides 0.89°C/W thermal resistance
A cold forged heatsink, suitable for LED applications up to 60W, has been released by GlacialTech. The Igloo FS127, which features 0.89°C/W thermal resistance, is available in a pin-fin heatsink design for improved airflow and surface area. Through anodised surface treatment, the heatsink is corrosion resistant, scratch-resistant and heat tolerant. Thus, the heatsink is more robust than untreated aluminium.
The heatsink is suitable for lighting applications as, unlike heatsinks with straight fin designs, it performs well regardless of orientation. To accommodate square-type lighting fixture designs, the heatsink is square in shape.
Through a combination of cold forging and high performance materials, the heatsink's 0.89°C/W thermal resistance is achieved. When compared to traditional die-casting or aluminium extrusion, cold forging produces heat sinks with improved thermal characteristics.
AL1050 aluminium is utilised by the heatsink and provides a thermal conductivity of 96.2-227W/mK, which is 2.36 times that of die casting. Cold forging has also enabled the heatsink to be produced in a one-piece design, with no assembly required.
