Claimed to be the most power-efficient in their class, three ultra-low-power, multichannel, 12-bit, 1MSPS SAR ADCs have been unveiled by Analog Devices. The two, four and eight channel ADCs are designed for battery-powered applications including DAQ modules, handheld meters, field instruments, communications and medical devices such as portable electrocardiograms and heart rate monitors.

Dissipating a maximum of 1.7mW at 1MSPS (over 60% less power than the closest SAR ADC competitor), the converters operate over a temperature range from -40 to +125°C. A programmable channel sequencer with access to the multiplexer output eliminates the need for one buffer per channel, saving both power and space.

Minimising processor power and overheads, the user programmable alert can signal an out-of-bounds condition without requiring the user to service the ADC output data. The AD7091R-2, AD7091R-4 and AD7091R-8 converters also feature a 5ppm/°C typical on-chip internal reference and an SPI interface.

Housed in a tiny 4x4mm LFCSP or 16-, 20- or 24-lead TSSOP, the ADCs are available now with prices starting from $2.47 each in 1,000 unit quantities.
