Class D speaker driver triples ultrabook power output
The DA7202, introduced today by Dialog Semiconductor, is a powerful and highly efficient low EMI Class D speaker driver designed with a small footprint in order to keep devices, such as the increasingly popular Ultrabook, as light and compact as possible. The DA7202 provides greater power output and improved efficiency levels for Ultrabooks, tablets and speaker accessories powered by a dual cell battery pack.
Available in a 9 bump WLCSP package with 0.5mm pitch, the DA7202 enables low cost printed circuit board technology. Enabling a Hi-Fi quality audio experience for end users, the increased power output of the DA7202 does not compromise the speaker audio quality and is designed to provide 90dB Total Harmonic Distortion plus noise (THD+N) and 100dB Signal to Noise ratio.
DA7202 is a powerful, highly efficient, low EMI Class D speaker driver that can drive a maximum of 7W into 8Ω loads directly from a 2S lithium-ion battery pack.
Offering a speaker driver output limited to just 1Watt, most mobile computing devices have historically used a CODEC with an integrated Class D amplifier. Driving up to 3.5Wrms, the use of a dual cell Class D amplifier significantly improves the power output of the device. This provides a 3.5 times increase of power into the speaker. Since a direct connection from the battery to Class D amp eliminates DC-DC power loss, this new audio architecture maintains better efficiency, on top of the higher power output.
Dialog Semiconductor's DA7202 Class D speaker driver features: robust short circuit and thermal overload protection to prevent device damage during a fault condition; differential audio inputs for improved resistance to external noise; and low Electromagnetic Interference by using spread spectrum modulation. This reduces interference in nearby components, thereby simplifying system design.
Udo Kratz, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Mobile Systems Business Group at Dialog Semiconductor, comments: “The DA7202 perfectly addresses the requirements of the Ultrabook and other portable device markets powered by a dual cell battery pack... our new external Class D amplifier offers a powerful and more efficient solution for the expanding dual cell market.”
