Renesas, IS2T and Micrium collaborate on embedded Java for RX MCUs
Renesas and the Alliance Partner Micrium announce a collaboration with IS2T to offer the MicroEJ Java platforms for Renesas RX microcontrollers. The collaboration between Renesas, Micrium and IS2T offers developers a software strategy based on the “application platform" approach.
That approach contributes to expand product ranges, to accelerate specification process, and to improve user experience for markets specifically targeted by the RX product family, such as smart grid, smart metering, smart appliances, building & home automation, and other Internet of Things applications.
Bernd Westhoff, RX Product Manager at Renesas, comments: "Embedded design is becoming more complex as design parameters evolve and demands for quicker time-to-market increase, especially for emerging IoT applications. Working closely with embedded software platform providers like Micrium and IS2T, enhances our ability to provide the flexibility, reliability, scalability and ease of use desired by customers developing the next generation of the IoT and graphical user interfaces with our high-performance, connected RX MCU.”
"Micrium is proud to build on the success of our 'Power of Two' program with Renesas. As embedded systems gradually move into the IoT market, Micrium's software framework already provides the perfect base for an IoT device. Our collaboration with IS2T, allows IS2T MicroEJ Java platforms to run on top of the Micrium kernels, and leverage our RTOS services, including our TCP/IP stack, our File System, and our USB Host and USB Device stacks. The combination of Micrium, Renesas and IS2T is the perfect solution for IoT devices. Using Micrium embedded software components reduces the Total Cost of Ownership and Time-to-Market as described in recent market research," commented Christian Légaré, Execute Vice President and CTO, at Micrium.
“Renesas provides the broadest MCU/MPU portfolio, combining low power, high performance, range of memory sizes and lots of feature-rich peripherals. Envisioning that more than 60% of total Embedded Development resources are spent on software, Renesas put in place a consistent software strategy to help their customers to reduce the Total Cost Of ownership of embedded systems. The combination of the RX MCUs, the Micrium's firmware, and IS2T MicroEJ application platform provides one of the best value / technical trade-off solutions. Indeed, this collaboration with Renesas and Micrium allows customers to benefit from mature technologies so that they may capitalize their added-value embedded software components across the whole Renesas' MCU/MPU portfolio," comments Fred Rivard, PhD, President of IS2T.
The IS2T MicroEJ encompasses the entire embedded software lifecycle management – prototyping, development and testing – powered by simulated development environment representative of the ‘target hardware’. The MicroEJ platform works on Micrium RTOS µC/OS-III running on Renesas RX MCU family. The scalability of MicroEJ allows the same application to be developed on a wide range of Renesas MCU/MPU devices, starting with the RX, based on customers’ target cost/performance constraints. As part of the MicroEJ platform, IS2T offers a rich, easy-to-use GUI for cost-sensitive MCUs, complementing Renesas RX MCUs with the Direct Drive solution for native graphic LCD support.
Availability
MicroEJ is available now for RX63N MCUs. Graphics demos featuring the MicroEJ GUI capability are available on the Embedded GUI Solution Kit (YLCDRX63N board) with graphic LCD. They can be downloaded from the YLCDRX63N web page: http://www.seriousintegrated.com/SIM225.
The Evaluation version of MicroEJ is available for download and test on the IS2T RX web page. For more information on MicroEJ®for RX and access to the evaluation version, visit: http://www.is2t.com/renesas.
