Freescale i.MX processor powers Sharp’s NetWalker device

Freescale Semiconductor technology is powering the recently announced Sharp NetWalker (PC-Z1) product – a lightweight, compact consumer device that offers instant-on functionality and mobile phone-like battery life. The advanced capabilities of the Freescale i.MX515 processor help the NetWalker PC-Z1 product deliver compelling functionality for the smartbook category such as ultra-long battery life and a streamlined form factor.

Commonly powered by processors based on ARM technology, smartbooks are connected mobile devices that combine elements of smartphones and netbooks. The Sharp NetWalker PC-Z1 incorporates the best features of a mobile phone, PC and e-book; providing low power consumption, instant-on capability and Internet browsing functionality.

Freescale has built a formidable ecosystem of partners and complementary technologies for smartbooks, including software and industrial design resources. Freescale’s smartbook solutions help OEMs lower costs, extend battery life and enable sleek form factors.

Weighing in at only 409 grams, the Sharp NetWalker delivers 10 hours of battery life between charges. It runs the Ubuntu OS, includes a full keyboard, features a five inch, 1024 x 600 LCD touchscreen display and offers fast launch functionality. The device will be initially available in Japan beginning Sept. 25, with other markets to follow in the future.
