BLDC motor control MCUs reduce system costs by 40%
Expanding the company's safety and efficiency support for home appliances and tools, Renesas has introduced the RL78/G1G group of MCUs. The MCUs enable power-efficient performance with shorter development time and up to 40% lower system costs for appliances such as advanced electric fans, electric tools, food processors, and other applications requiring fine motor control.
The RL78/G1G MCUs integrate an amplifier, which supports setting the amplification factor for very small signals by using software, and a high-speed two-channel comparator with a maximum response time of 0.15µs (1/8 that of comparable earlier Renesas products). This integration eliminates the need to add external devices for inverter circuit fault detection during BLDC motor control and makes it possible to reduce the size of the wiring board. The integrated comparator can select a PGA output signal, making it possible to use it as an overvoltage protection device for the inverter circuit during brushless motor control.
Backward compatibility with earlier RL78/G14 products, the RL78/G1G MCUs include an on-chip timer RD optimised for brushless motor control, enabling wide-ranging scalability in combination with the RL78/G14 MCUs. This allows a single platform to be used to develop products ranging from the high-end to the popularly priced and to reuse existing software which helps to shorten the time required for development.
Offered in six versions with package pin counts of 30, 32 or 44 pins and on-chip flash memory capacity of 8 or 16KB, the RL78/G1G MCUs are sampling now. Scheduled to begin in December 2014, mass production is expected to reach a combined volume of 500,000 units per month in 2015.
