ACAL Technology have signed a technical distribution agreement, covering the UK and France, with Europe’s largest independent DRAM module and Flash storage manufacturer, Swissbit. The agreement will give designers of embedded and industrial products, access to Swissbit’s rugged storage devices combined with ACAL Technology’s extensive expertise in the design and custom assembly of products for embedded and industrial environments.

Swissbit’s SWISSMEMORY DRAM product line features Chip-On-Board (CoB) as well as standard surface-mount devices in DRAM, SDRAM, DDR, DDR2, and DDR3 technologies. Their Flash product range comprises CFast™ serial Flash, CompactFlash, Secure Digital cards and solid-state drives, as well as USB modules and stick drives. All Swissbit products are manufactured in Germany and are available in commercial and industrial temperature ranges.

ACAL Technology’s European Product Manager, Richard Pollard explains, “The combination of Swissbit’s rugged memory products and ACAL’s extensive experience in design for challenging embedded and industrial applications, provides OEMs with powerful new resources to facilitate the design and assembly of robust storage systems.”

By mounting the DRAM or Flash memory die directly onto a substrate, Swissbit Chip-On-board (CoB) technology provides a number of key advantages over conventional surface-mount packages, particularly for extreme industrial applications: CoB modules can achieve board savings of up to 20% compared to surface-mount devices, combined with a reduction of up to x5 in weight and volume. COB technology also reduces the number of interconnects between the active die and the substrate resulting in faster overall circuit speed and higher clock rates as well as enhanced electrical performance and signal quality which increases the overall reliability of the module.

The applications which would benefit most by using Swissbit memory devices include industrial automation, industrial computers, M2M networks such as digital signage and infotainment systems, measurement, telecommunications infrastructure and ATM machines. The devices are also suitable for demanding sectors such as transport and automotive, medical, aerospace and defence, where equipment may be exposed to harsh environmental conditions such as extreme temperatures, shock and vibration, or be required to provide 24/7 operation.
