Fujitsu Semiconductor release the MB85RC1MT, a 1Mb FRAM product with I2C interface. This represents the highest memory capacity of the company's line-up for the I2C serial interface and is offered in an industry-standard SOP-8 package that is pin-compatible with EEPROM and Flash memory.

Featuring high endurance and low power consumption, the FRAM product enables frequent logging at low power, which is suited for factory automation and industrial instrument applications.

The MB85RC1MT product operates at voltages from1.8-3.3V, and at temperatures from -40 to +85°C. The device's active power supply draws a maximum of 1.2mA (at 3.4MHz). Taking the extremely short write cycle of FRAM into consideration, the system is much more energy-efficient than EEPROM.

MB85RC1MT also supports "high-speed" mode at its operating frequency, which enables read/write operations at 3.4MHz in parallel to 1MHz operation - the same speed as conventional EEPROMs. As a result, many logging applications featuring an I2C interface can now replace their EEPROMs with the new FRAM product. This enables high-precision data capture via high-frequency logging while reducing the power consumed by data write cycles.

Fujitsu started volume production of FRAM in 1999. Due to the technology's unique features, FRAM-based products now enjoy widespread use in applications such as factory automation, instrumentation, financial terminals and medical devices. Fujitsu was recently awarded the "Okochi Memorial Technology Prize" for developments in the field of FRAM. With the addition of the MB85RC1MT, Fujitsu has now extended its FRAM product line-up of I2C interface, covering the density range from 4kb-1Mb, while the line-up for SPI interface covers the density range from 16kb-2Mb.

Samples of MB85RC1MT are now available.
