Upstream diagnostic analysis aims to reduce cable MSO costs
As part of its portfolio of DOCSIS 3.0 and 3.1 products, Broadcom has announced the world's first upstream diagnostic analyser technology, aiming to help cable Multi-System Operators (MSOs) remotely detect and locate upstream noise sources in real time, enabling proactive diagnosis and resolution of subscriber's network connectivity issues without costly service calls or truck rolls
Broadcom's upstream diagnostic analyser technology aims to provide cable MSOs with effective, cost-efficient products that reduce overall operational expenses, so that the savings can be passed to consumers. In addition to Broadcom's field-proven downstream Full Band Capture (FBC) diagnostic technology for broadband and video traffic monitoring, the upstream diagnostic analyser complements Broadcom's Wi-Fi Insight for pinpointing and solving consumer connectivity problems, IEEE1905 for visibility and management into subscriber's home networks and Broadcom's FastRinstall process.
The analyser locates ingress/burst noise to a single CPE, using multiple CPEs to isolate the exact location of the noise source. Information and spectrum analysis is available via existing Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) or web user interface
“Over the lifespan of a CPE product, the operational expenses associated with servicing and troubleshooting can easily dwarf the initial capital expense,” said Jay Kirchoff, Vice President of Marketing, Broadcom. “For the first time ever, operators will be able to remotely detect and locate ingress noise sources in the return-path spectrum without the cost of deploying technicians into the field and without disturbing a customer's service.”
“Comcast is committed to finding ways to continuously improve our service to customers,” said Patrick O'Hare, Senior Vice President, Field Operations, Comcast. “We already utilise Broadcom's Full Band Capture remote diagnostic technology for diagnosing video and broadband traffic issues for our subscribers. With this upstream diagnostic analyser technology, we can further extend our customer service capabilities and make another huge stride in reducing the TCO of CPE.”
Broadcom's upstream diagnostic analyser is available as part of Broadcom's portfolio of currently shipping cable gateway silicon products.
