Real time clock module outperforms clock crystals
A real time clock module with a built-in power switch function is available at Rutronik. Epson’s RX8130CE is suitable for industrial, networking and consumer electronics applications. Applications using real time clocks are much more reliable and can be more accurate compared to applications using merely clock crystals with 32,768kHz.
In addition, the real time clock keeps the time information even at lower supply voltages, thus saving power when the main system is shut down, e.g. during the weekend.
The newly developed clock module is designed for the use of any power source, including discharging battery as primary supply. Any power supply can be used as backup power supply, even Lithium-Ion batteries since user programmable charge control is implemented.
Due to the built-in power switch function no external circuits are required for the switch from primary to backup power supply in case the main supply is turned off.
The new module has a size of 3,2 x 2,5mm, a max. current consumption of 500nA in backup-mode and a frequency tolerance of 5 +/- 23ppm at a temperature of 25°C.
It features an I2C interface and various functions like temperature compensated frequency output, alarm and timer function as well as a built-in RAM in addition to the basic clock function.
