Elo TouchSystems, a division of Tyco Electronics Corporation, has added its latest acoustic pulse recognition touch technology to the already versatile 1529L 15in LCD multifunction touchmonitor. In addition to APR, the 1529L includes options for an integrated three-track magnetic stripe reader, 2 x 20 vacuum fluorescent rear-facing customer display and a biometric fingerprint recognition device. Typical applications for the 1529L with APR include point-of-sale, point-of-service, loyalty systems and kiosk information systems.
“APR touch technology operates by listening for a touch,” says Elo Director of Product Management, Michael Bartelmess. “A touch at each position on the glass generates a unique sound. Four tiny transducers attached to the edges of the touchscreen glass pick up the sound of the touch. The sound is then digitised by the controller and compared to a list of prerecorded sounds for every position on the glass. The cursor position is instantly updated by the touch location.”

According to Bartelmess, Elo’s APR touch technology is more cost-effective because it uses a simple table lookup method instead of requiring powerful and expensive signal processing hardware.

The 1529L 15in LCD multifunction touchmonitor was designed for touch from the ground up. “Because connectivity is incorporated within the touchmonitor, we have reduced the number of power bricks and eliminated cable confusion,” says Elo Product Manager Ignace Verhamme. “Optional peripherals for the 1529L touchmonitor include a three-track MSR, 2 x 20 vacuum fluorescent rear-facing customer display and a biometric fingerprint recognition device. All are available with a choice of Elo’s popular touch technologies: IntelliTouch surface wave, AccuTouch five-wire resistive, CarrollTouch infrared and now also Acoustic Pulse Recognition.”
