“Switch on, start work”: 64-bit ARM developer system
An entry level ARMv8-A developer system, powered by the AMD Opteron A1100 series processor, the Overdrive 1000, has been launched by SoftIron. Purpose built for developers seeking a fast, reliable platform for native coding ARM-based applications, the Overdrive 1000 comes complete with the essential tools to get 64-bit ARM development up and running, out-of-the-box. The Overdrive 1000 was launched today at the openSUSE conference, as part of a keynote presentation given by Norman Fraser, CEO, SoftIron.
The Overdrive 1000 is an affordable, feature rich system and tool set for developers looking for a native 64-bit environment. Focused on capability, convenience and cost, the Overdrive 1000 features a quad-core ARM Cortex-A57 based System-on-a-Chip (SoC) and 8GB DDR4 memory, with a 1TB hard drive with fast direct-attach SATA 3.0 ports and Gigabit Ethernet network Interface.
“The Overdrive 1000 offers an immediate, out-of-the-box development capability. Many developers want more than what the DIY boards can offer but only need specific parts of the functionality delivered by full on enterprise systems. The Overdrive 1000 fills the needs of these professionals. Despite the entry-level price, the Overdrive 1000 shows that there is no need to integrate separate, unreliable boards, or to sacrifice capabilities that later restricts projects,” said Fraser.
“We have designed and built the Overdrive 1000 with one of the toughest audiences in mind: developers. Be they native 64-bit ARM, Linux focused or part of the ARM ecosystem, developers are a highly critical audience and demand the best experience from the first power-up. That is what the Overdrive 1000 delivers. We have followed a standard, open design, from the ATX power and form factor to the UEFI boot process. The Overdrive 1000 runs Linux OS (openSUSE Leap) and comes with Apache webserver, MySQL, PHP, Xen, KVM Hypervisor, Docker and OpenJDK pre-installed so developers can get to work and see results straight out of the box.”
“This new offering from SoftIron shows the breadth of options offered by the AMD Opteron A1100 Series processor,” said Dan Bounds, Senior Director, AMD Enterprise Solutions. “From native ARM developers, to Linux specialists and beyond, the Opteron processor enables the fast, accurate development of ARM applications and the Overdrive 1000 is an exciting offering for these markets.”
“With a diverse set of ARM-based components entering the market, the time is right to empower the developer community to harness those integrated capabilities and contribute to enabling disruptive server platforms with significant energy efficiency, density and cost benefits.” said Lakshmi Mandyam, Director of Server Systems and Ecosystems, ARM. “The Overdrive 1000 provides developers with easy access to a standards-based platform enabling them to efficiently develop, test and optimise scalable software for next generation data centre workloads.”
