Pentek has announced the Talon RTR 255x series, a new high performance Small Form Factor (SFF) recorder product line for serial data streams. Optimised for SWaP (size, weight and power), the Pentek Talon RTR SFF product line provides the performance and storage capacity previously only possible in much larger rack-mountable products.

Measuring 5.25x8.5x14" and weighing only 17 pounds, this small package is capable of sustained real time recording speeds up to 4GB/s and can hold up to 30.7 TB of removable SSD storage. Power consumption has been greatly reduced with most systems drawing less than 120W at full operation.

The Talon RTR 255x series implements Pentek's extensive line of digital serial modules including 40Gb Ethernet, serial Front Panel Data Port (sFPDP) and Low Voltage Differential Signaling (LVDS). All are capable of both receiving and transmitting data for recording and playback of data streams. The digital serial interfaces provide popular options for remote connection of the recorder to data sources.

  • RTR 2555 - Ethernet: 1, 10, and 40Gb Ethernet supporting both TCP and UDP protocols with copper or optical interfaces.
  • RTR 2556 - Serial FPDP: Up to four SFP connectors supporting copper, single-mode or multimode fiber to accommodate all popular sFPDP interfaces.
  • RTR 2558 - LVDS: Utilises a 32-bit LVDS interface that can be clocked at speeds up to 250MHz. It includes Data Valid and Suspend signals and provides the ability to turn these signals on and off as well as control their polarity.

An integrated high speed RAID controller is coupled with Enterprise class SSDs for hours of real time, wide bandwidth data capture. Up to eight hot-swap SSDs deliver a total storage capacity up to 30.6TB with support for RAID levels 0, 5 or 6.

All eight SSD data drives, and the single operating system SSD, can be easily removed from front panel drive bays in seconds. Drives are mounted on sleds for easy transfer to an offload system so the recorder can remain installed while data is transported to the lab.

"The new Talon RTR Small Form Factor Recorders allow engineers and integrators to add real time high speed recording to their system in environments where space is constrained," said Chris Tojeira, Recording Systems Director, Pentek.

He added: “We're excited to provide the widest record bandwidths and largest storage capacities available in a package this size."

Ease of operation
Talon recorders are built on Windows OS with an Intel Core i7 processor and provide both a Windows-based GUI and API to control the system. SystemFlow provides point-and-click configuration management and storage of custom configurations for single-click setup.

A user API allows custom recorder control interfaces to be easily built. Users can install post-processing and analysis tools to operate on the data that is saved to the native NTFS file system.

Available models, options and simulation package
The Talon SFF recorders offer an optional GPS receiver for precise time and position stamping. An ATX power supply accepts 110V-240VAC, drawing under 150W and typically around 100W. Models have options for a 6-30VDC power supply and a removable operating system drive. Several options for digital inputs are available. I/O on all models includes USB 2.0, 3.0 and 3.1 ports and dual Gigabit Ethernet connections.

Pentek's SystemFlow Simulator provides a 'test drive' of the SystemFlow recording software installed on all Talon recording systems. The simulator allows users to operate the standard GUI and the SystemFlow API.

Talon recorder family
Pentek's Talon Recording Systems are high speed recording and playback systems capable of streaming data to disk in real time. They are available in portable, rackmount and small form factor configurations allowing operation in a variety of environments.
