SOMNIUM Technologies has released its Device-aware Resequencing Tools (DRT) product, a complete software development environment for Freescale Kinetis MCUs. SOMNIUM DRT Freescale Kinetis Edition combines SOMNIUM’s patented Device-aware Resequencing technology with a familiar UI and 100% industry standard compatibility with the Eclipse IDE and GNU tools.

Difficulties usually experienced when designing modern embedded systems are overcome using DRT’s cost effective development tools to support optimisation for Kinetis MCUs. DRT’s fully automated optimisations require no manual intervention, no complex rewriting of software and no costly staff retraining. Developers using SOMNIUM’s DRT products will have a significant advantage over their competitors, reaching the market faster with higher performance, greater energy efficiency and more profitable designs.

Unlike traditional tools that only consider the ARM Cortex processor, DRT is aware of the coupling of the processor and its memory system, automatically applying a series of device-specific optimisations. This makes the programme dramatically smaller, faster and more efficient, saving significant development time and money. DRT’s ‘out-of-the-box’ solution is compatible with other GNU based tools, including Freescale CodeWarrior and Kinetis Design Studio (KDS) IDE, and requires no source code changes.

Following a significant collaboration with Freescale on its Kinetis Design Studio IDE, SOMNIUM is also proud to announce its Proven Partner status within the Freescale Connect Partner Programme. SOMNIUM has been accepted into the Freescale Connect Partner Programme prior to releasing the SOMNIUM DRT for Freescale Kinetis MCUs. The Kinetis Design Studio IDE is a key element of Freescale's microcontroller strategy, providing a high quality user experience for entry-level development tools.

Working closely with Freescale's internal software teams, SOMNIUM have pulled together the wide variety of component parts which constitute the Kinetis Design Studio IDE and are heavily involved in enhancing GNU and Eclipse functionality to satisfy the needs of embedded software developers. This also includes third party software and drivers enabling market leading debug solutions, in addition to popular open source debugging tools.

“As a leader in embedded microcontrollers across a diverse set of vertical applications such as industrial, medical and smart energy, our customers are demanding we provide them with standards based tools” said Michael Norman, Microcontroller Software and Tools Product Manager, Freescale. “SOMNIUM was selected to develop the Kinetis Design Studio IDE because of their deep understanding of Eclipse and GNU tools, as well as their ability to leverage the upcoming SOMNIUM DRT product roadmap.”

Dave Edwards, CEO & CTO, SOMNIUM added, “SOMNIUM is bringing a whole new approach to the embedded software development tools sector which will enable embedded systems developers to introduce new products to market faster, with lower associated costs and increases in both performance and energy efficiency. Our partnership with Freescale is extremely important to our progression as a company, we look forward to continued collaboration on both Kinetis Design Studio IDE and our own ‘optimised for Freescale’ SOMNIUM DRT products.”
