PLX Extends Leadership in USB with New USB 3.0 Solutions for Multiple Markets
PLX Technology, Inc. today announced completion of key design milestones that bring to market diverse USB 3.0 (SuperSpeed USB) solutions for a wide variety of applications. This PLX development expands on the company's USB 2.0 expertise and PCI Express leadership, and will be compliant with the high-performance and interoperability standards of the USB 3.0 specification. PLX USB 3.0 solutions will initially be delivered to designers focused on direct-attached storage and network-attached external consumer storage products.
ReceThe market potential for USB 3.0 is wide and growing, according to industry experts.
USB 3.0 will emerge quickly in the PC cluster, especially in the digital media and storage markets, said Brian O'Rourke, In-Stat principal analyst and author of the report Wired USB 2009: High-Speed Rules, SuperSpeed on the Way. PLX, with its several years of experience in USB 2.0 and now its SuperSpeed 3.0 program, is in a favorable position to capitalize on this rise across all market segments.
With USB 3.0, PLX intends to build upon its rich history of superior performance, software support and standards compliance, said Jimmy Chou, director of marketing for USB products at PLX. Our robust and growing product line of USB, as well as SATA, IEEE1394 and PCI Express solutions, enables PLX to provide engineers with the industry's most advanced connectivity with a focus on differentiation.
PLX has put in place the necessary resources and focus to assure a leadership position in USB 3.0 devices that are backed up with unique value-added software features, interoperability and worldwide technical support. Building on PLX's extensive background in innovation and differentiation in software-enabled USB 2.0 solutions, as well as its dominance in the PCIe market, the company has chartered cross-functional teams in both its Sunnyvale, Calif., and Abingdon, U.K., design centers to accelerate hardware and firmware development.
PLX brings to USB 3.0 several years of development, marketing and advocacy experience. The company's USB products today deliver leading performance to a wide range of industry segments, including MFPs, portable media players, GPS systems, TV tuners, PCs, notebooks, WLAN devices, mobile phones, digital cameras, and camcorders. PLX's recent acquisition of Oxford Semiconductor added core designs in USB for consumer storage, as well as USB 2.0-to-PCIe bridging, to the USB product portfolio. Additionally, PLX experts have written on and presented papers about USB and PCIe technology in several-dozen global industry trade publications and at various technical conferences.
