Platform targets touch-enabled UIs for wearables

Designed for touch-enabled UIs, the QTouch Surface platform has been released by Atmel. Built on the QTouch capacitive touch button sensing technology, the platform features an on-chip peripheral touch controller, enabling higher performance capacitive touch on Atmel MCUs. The platform consumes less than 4µA, making it suitable for wearables and other battery-powered applications that require a capacitive touch user interface.

To implement the QTouch Surface platform, one Atmel controller can be used for both the application and capacitive touch user interface, reducing cost. The company will be showcasing the platform at both CES and Embedded World. The former takes place from 6th to 9th January 2015, in Las Vegas, United States, while the latter takes place from 24th to 26th February 2015, in Nuremburg, Germary.

Alongside QTouch Surface Library and QTouch Composer support, Atmel offers the Xplained Pro hardware platform for use with the QTouch Surface platform.

“UIs in consumer products such as wearable/IoT devices, remote controls and PC/gaming controls are being driven by the massive adoption of touchscreens in smart phones and tablets,” commented Geir Kjosavik, Director, QTouch Product Marketing, Atmel. “Products in this category require a surface solution with lower power consumption and higher cost optimisation that do not require the performance from higher-end touchscreen controllers. The QTouch Surface platform is a suitable solution for all these requirements.”
