New RFID module supports move to contactless
At a time when contactless technology is of increased importance, embedded systems specialist Recab UK is now offering the new ThingMagic M3e Secure Module from JADAK. The M3e is a high frequency (HF) and low frequency (LF) RFID module with a totally integrated Secure Access Module (SAM), designed specifically for authenticating personnel across a wide spectrum of security environments.
Recab UK believes the module is ideally suited to the changing requirements of facilities, as well as general product tracking and security.
The module’s SAM manages secure authentication keys that are required to access private data on RFID tags, offering greater security of sensitive information to non-authenticated personnel. The module is also futureproof, designed on software defined radio architecture that allows for flexibility to add features and to constantly improve the product. Its compact dimensions, measuring 26x22x3mm, do not compromise the performance of the module, providing a high level of integration and SDR architecture.
The M3e has a RF frequency of 13.56 MHz in high frequency and 125 to 134.2 kHz in the low-frequency range. It also supports direct connection to an external high frequency antenna with 1 uH, 0.8 Ohm matching, and for low frequency is compatible with a differentially-driven coil antenna with a nominal inductance of 505 uH.
“The M3e comes at a crucial time when security and traceability is vital in most industries,” said Martin Frederiksen, Managing Director of Recab UK. “We’ve been working with a number of companies in the past 12 months on projects relating to RFID tracking of people and products, with two key considerations being read distance and data security.
“For example, in healthcare a greater read distance on key devices can reduce risk of contamination and allow clinicians to scan identification tags quickly in emergency situations. Here, the M3e’s extended read distance is best, allowing it to successfully scan from up to two inches away in both low- and high-frequency.
“This is valuable even in industries that have previously only made minimal use of technologies such as RFID, as pandemic outbreak prevention guidelines continue to evolve. With the M3e, alongside our embedded system development and design expertise, we can support more businesses to adopt more contactless systems.”
The M3e Secure Module is standardised according to the ThingMagic platform architecture and utilises a Mercury API interface, similar to other JADAK ThingMagic products. These features provide an easier software integration and customisation based on form, fit and function of SKUs. Additionally, the M3e module was designed to add an increased level of security to the module, which ensures the readability of encrypted iClass badges.
The module provides full modular certification, allowing increased flexibility when choosing suitable antenna for each application and diminishing the burdens of original equipment manufacturers’ (OEMs) regulatory filing requirements.
