Multi-standard SDR platform takes centre stage at MILCOM
At the Military Communications Conference (MILCOM) 2014, Altera and Lime Microsystems demonstrated a multi-standard SDR platform. Based on Lime’s field-programmable RF (FP-RF) chip and Altera's FPGAs and Enpirion PowerSoCs, the platform enables engineers to design radio that can receive and transmit a range of different radio protocols (or waveforms), depending on the software used.
Integrating Lime's LMS7002M RF device, the solution provides flexibility and performance for communications systems designers, without consuming high amounts of power. The devices can easily be programmed to produce any combination of waveform and RF transmission, making them suited for MIMO wireless applications, as well as other RF techniques useful for military communications.
Ian Land, Senior Manager, Military, Aerospace and Government Business Unit, Altera, commented: “The cooperation between Lime and Altera will give developers easy access to open-source, optimised reference designs, boards and software stacks and drivers. Open source provides a quick, easy and affordable method to build next-generation secure wireless systems.”
"By combining an Altera FPGA for digital processing with a Lime FP-RF transceiver, we can offer a new level of wireless performance and the ultimate solution for SDR applications. Altera’s FPGAs paired with Lime’s FP-RF transceivers enable designers to create low-cost, fully programmable wireless systems across multiple applications such as remote radio heads, base stations, military comms, SDR, and IoT applications," added Ebrahim Bushehri, CEO, Lime Microsystems.
