IAR Systems has launched the latest version of its development tools for STMicroelectronics' STM8. Version 2.10 of IAR Embedded Workbench for STM8 adds improvements and functionality for debugging, as well as selectable maths functions, updated user documentation and further device support.

STM8 MCUs are used in industrial and consumer applications, automotive applications, and in various applications where low power consumption is essential. The STM8 MCU platform is implemented around a high-performance 8-bit core and an advanced set of peripherals. The platform is manufactured using an ST-proprietary 130nm embedded non-volatile memory technology.

Support for STM8 MCUs is offered via the IAR Embedded Workbench, including the optimising IAR C/C++ Compiler and C-SPY Debugger. Added to this version are C-SPY windows that simplify the management of macros. C-SPY macros can be used to automate debugging and verification tasks, and also to perform a wide variety of other tasks such as hardware configuration, simulation of peripheral drivers and feeding of the application with simulated data during runtime. Also recently introduced to C-SPY are the functionality to save watch window content and added features for developers working with the ST-LINK or STice emulators.

The high-performance build tools in IAR Embedded Workbench for STM8 feature sophisticated code optimisations operating on multiple levels and creating the most compact code in the industry. By making use of the ability to select smaller maths functions, developers can squeeze their code even further.

Version 2.10 also includes updated development and debugging guides, as well as support for the latest STM8 devices. IAR Systems’ tools also offer complete support for ST's ARM Cortex-based STM32 MCUs. This broad coverage provides customers with simplified migration and the ability to work with the full lineup of ST MCUs using the same development environment.
