Imagination Technologies has announced Java SE 8 for MIPS, as part of an ongoing collaboration with Oracle intended to enhance Java for embedded and IoT applications and optimise Java for the MIPS CPU architecture. The foundation for a broad range of networked applications, Java is a global standard for developing and delivering embedded, web-based and enterprise content and applications which is playing an increasing role in the IoT.

With Java support for the MIPS architecture, MIPS licensees can make use of this highly portable language and platform for a broad range of applications including routers, wireless access points, residential gateways, next-gen consumer premises equipment, other networking equipment, mobile devices, IoT and embedded computing.

Georges Saab, Vice President of Development, Java Platform, Oracle, said: “The MIPS architecture is widely used in networking, embedded and other key markets. Java support for MIPS will enable application development on the many MIPS-based devices such as gateways and routers that are out there in the market, and will play a key role for emerging and future devices. Imagination and MicroDoc, who are working on MIPS platform ports, will provide the foundation for connected devices, and we look forward to continuing our collaboration with both companies in support of MIPS.”

Tony King-Smith, Executive Vice President of Marketing, Imagination, added: “As products such as gateways and routers increasingly incorporate more features, and as products of all types are increasingly connected, it’s vital that we enable key industry enablers like Java for MIPS CPUs and our other IP families. The large installed base of MIPS-based products can benefit from Java, and as MIPS continues to drive into the IoT and other areas, the opportunity continues to grow. We are delighted to continue our work with Oracle and its partners to deliver great Java performance and applications.”

Dan Artusi, Vice President & General Manager, Lantiq, commented: “This development is very exciting for Lantiq. We are pleased to be working closely with Oracle to enable Java on our MIPS-based chipsets for broadband access and home networking. These products already provide unprecedented levels of quality and advanced features. With Oracle Java on MIPS, our customers have access to an established platform to develop a range of exciting new applications for next-generation networks and the connected home.”

Java SE 8 for the MIPS32 architecture will be available during Q2 2015 directly from MicroDoc GmbH, a Java Integrator.
