IO-Link reference designs improve industrial efficiency
Two subsystem reference designs, introduced by Maxim Integrated Products, integrate the benefits of IO-Link into a proximity sensor and a 16-channel digital-input hub. The MAXREFDES27# provides very accurate, low-power optical proximity sensing; while the MAXREFDES36# enhances distributed control with a compact digital-input hub.
'Smart‘ manufacturing relies on high-speed automation and superior sensing, increasing the need for versatile and accurate proximity sensing and a greater number of system sensor inputs.
Providing efficient two-way communication between a controller and a remote optical sensor, the MAXREFDES27# proximity sensor employs the IO-Link protocol. Using this IO-Link subsystem reference design, operators can tune and calibrate an optical proximity sensor up to 14-bit resolution. The design is tunable and can be calibrated for different surfaces and light levels, while integrated DC/DC low-power conversion increases system efficiency. Robust IO-Link performance provides self-configuration, efficient two-way communication between sensor and control module and protection mechanisms. With the entire design fitting on an 8.2x31.5mm PCB, it typically consumes just 150mW. This reduces heat dissipation, enabling higher reliability and increased uptime.
Merging 16 industrial control digital inputs into its hub and eliminating 15 cables connected to the PLC, the MAXREFDES36# IO-Link subsystem consumes only 235mW of power (typical). Robust IO-link performance provides self-configuration, short-circuit and shutdown protection, thermal warnings and drive capability. Fitting in a standard DIN rail PCB holder, the 53.75x72mm design is claimed to be 60% smaller than current solutions.
David Andeen, Reference Design Manager, Maxim Integrated Products, comments: “Proximity sensing and distributed control are two critical elements of the industrial transformation. Utilising IO-Link with an optical sensor makes for a low-power, versatile sensor. By reducing the number of wires running across the factory floor, the digital-input module lowers cable cost and simplifies maintenance. The MAXREFDES27# and MAXREFDES36# enable customers to create better industrial designs quickly, reduce cost and improve the overall factory performance.”
The MAXREFDES27# and MAXREFDES36# boards are available for $99 each.
