High-tech adhesives from DELO used for thin-film solar cells

These light-curing products, made from epoxy resins or acrylates, are well suited for bonding the protective films of thin-film solar cells. The adhesives also act as an effective barrier against humidity.

Thin-film solar cells are used for facades, lightweight roofs, or charging columns. Made up of several layers, with a thickness in the millimetre range, these solar cells feature active, energy-producing layers that are often vapor-deposited onto glass or an organic carrier material and covered with protective film on the front and back.

DELO KATIOBOND LP655 can be used to bond the protective film of the solar cell. The light-curing epoxy resin also acts as a barrier and effectively protects the active layers from humidity. This is extremely important at the edges, as penetrating humidity would impair the solar cells' functionality.

The raw materials used in the adhesive allow for a low water vapor transmission rate of 6g per mm/m² in 24h, which has been tested at a temperature of 60°C and a relative humidity of 90%. This prevents premature degradation of the solar cells and contributes to a long lifetime.

The adhesive features high peel resistance on PET, the plastic material typically used for protective films. The transparent product cures in seconds under UV light and has been optimised for slot-die coating. DELO also offers various products based on epoxy resins and acrylates that can be used for roll-to-roll processes.

DELO continues to develop new adhesive solutions that are adapted to the ever changing technical and economic requirements in the solar industry. The adhesives undergo intensive testing, conducted in cooperation with global development partners such as Oninn Innovation Centre from Brazil.
