GE announce 6U VME rugged single board computer
GE Intelligent Platforms has today announced an expansion of its quad-core 4th generation Intel Core i7 architecture based products with a new 6U VME rugged single board computer, the XVR16. The new XVR16 SBC features improved capabilities allowing it to be used in demanding High Performance Embedded Computing signal processing applications such as intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, sonar and radar. The XVR16 is also suited to address existing command/control applications.
Designed to maximise the value of customer investments by continuously providing a frequent, straightforward, cost-effective upgrade/technology insertion path, the XVR16 is competitively priced for the level of performance offered. The XVR16 offers significantly more processing power, graphics performance, functionality and I/O capability than its predecessors, the XVR14 and XVR15. More importantly, it offers these enhanced features within the same power envelope as its predecessors, allowing simple ‘drop in’ replacement.
Being based on the 4th generation Intel Core i7 architecture offers numerous improvements over previous generations, including Intel Advance Vector Extensions. This delivers a significant performance improvement in floating-point-intensive computations which are a key part of digital signal and image processing applications. Delivering 2D/3D graphics with high quality playback for a compelling visual experience, the media and graphics performance is also greatly enhanced. Utilising hardware to accelerate data encryption and decryption, the new improved security comes in the form of Intel AES New Instructions enhancements.
Rod Rice, General Manager, Military & Aerospace Products at GE Intelligent Platforms, commented: “Customers are developing more complex applications than ever before, and SWaP – size, weight and power – is a recurring issue. The XVR16 takes advantage of the latest processors from Intel and addresses that issue by providing significantly more capability – but without any penalty in terms of size, weight, power consumption or heat dissipation.”
Featuring up to 16GBytes of memory and supporting two onboard PMC/XMC expansion sites, the XVR16 benefits from the 4th generation Intel Core i7 processor’s support of PCI Express Gen3 technology and USB3.0. This enables greater bandwidth for on-board and off-board connectivity and also enables the high bandwidths required by modern applications.
The XVR16 is available in five build versions from air-cooled to fully rugged, providing cost-effective solutions in environments from benign to extremely harsh.
