The International Telecommunications Union (ITU) has approved the G.fast broadband technology standard, allowing G.fast to become broadly available in a bid to help service providers deliver speeds over DSL of up to 1Gb/s in mixed-technology broadband delivery scenarios over existing copper lines.

This whitepaper provides an overview of use cases and applications of G.fast transmission technology that is currently under development. The goal of G.fast is to deliver data at fibre speed to the customers using telephony copper wires.

This solution will provide high speed services at a reasonable deployment cost for many subscribers. Low power consumption and ease of use for the customers are the main goals of the technology.

Hardware-based simulations demonstrate the capabilities of G.fast for different applications. The channel models used to build different network topologies are based on joint work from Deutsche Telekom and Lantiq.

Lantiq has provided solutions for specific core features of G.fast which are presented in this paper.
