Redline Launches World’s Fastest Wireless Broadband Solution Operating in “White Space” Frequencies

“Redline Communications has always pushed the boundaries of wireless broadband technology,” said Bojan Subasic, vice president research and development at Redline Communications. “Now in the white space frequencies, our product combines the greatest capacity with the longest range, and adds the reliability and security that Redline is known for, making our wireless network technology ideal for wide area applications in more remote areas – oilfields, mining operations, public infrastructure monitoring (i.e., utilities, highways, water systems) – and for bringing communications to remote communities.



In 2008 the FCC unlicensed the VHF and UHF TV spectrum previously used for analog television broadcasts. Known as “white space,” this range of spectrum is adjacent to the licensed spectrum used in cellular telephone service, possessing many of the same wireless propagation attributes. Wireless signals transmitted within this spectrum range can travel over long distances, over hills, around buildings and other physical obstacles making it very useful and cost-effective for a wide range of WAN applications.



“Today Redline targets low-latency, real time remote wireless control for high performance industrial applications like oil and gas drilling and recovery in truly remote regions” noted Sue Rudd, director of service provider analysis at Strategy Analytics. “To meet the global requirements of these very demanding Machine-to-Machine markets Redline had to develop unique wireless base stations configurable for almost any frequency, with range, high downlink and uplink and speeds, rugged reliability, and fast small packet handling.”



Redline’s RDL-3000 sub-700 MHz network technology which operates in frequencies between 470 and 698 MHz (“Sub-700Mhz”) leverages the non-line-of-site network attributes of the UHF spectrum, but supercharges the speed and distance of the transmission, plus adds military grade security for reliable wireless connections over long distances.



“It’s not enough to make wireless products that comply with FCC requirements and go long distances at great speeds – they must also be secure,” added Subasic. “Because they’re used for mission critical operations like oil and gas, or to monitor public infrastructure, Redline networks are engineered to fend off attacks such as man-in-the-middle or denial of service, tampering with access to the device or with the enclosure itself.”



Redline’s sub-700 MHz network systems are software configured to comply with any country’s regulatory specifications and therefore can be used anywhere in the world. Depending on channel size, terrain, and local regulations, outside of the USA, Canada and the UK, Redline’s sub-700 MHz RDL-3000 network systems can operate at speeds of up to 100 Mbps over distances as great as 20 miles (30 km), and at slower speeds can reach distances up to 35 miles (approximately 60 km).



To operate in the white space spectrum in the United States, the FCC has mandated additional requirements, including tight restrictions on the radio transmitter and a national spectrum usage database. Redline’s White Space system features a software adaptable radio and has implemented the Spectrum Bridge database lookup system that automatically determines what frequencies are still in use at the deployment site, and adjusts the network radio to the best available frequency to assure transmission without any signal interference. Redline’s White Space system is the first end-to-end solution for true wireless broadband in the sub-700 range to pass all FCC and Industry Canada licensing tests, and in a single FCC channel (6 MHz) can operate at speeds of up to 20 Mbps and at distances up to 35 miles (approximately 60 km).



The Redline sub-700 MHz RDL-3000 can operate over extended distances without requiring line-of-site. This expanded range and ability to transmit without line-of-site means fewer base stations keeping infrastructure costs low. When combined with Redline’s lower power consumption design and ruggedized form factor, the system is ideal for providing wireless coverage in remote areas where power can be derived from alternative energy sources such as solar and where absolute reliable operation is important.



In addition to operating in white space frequencies it can also operate in any frequency up to 6 GHz, including key bands – 900 MHz, 1.3 GHz, 2.5 GHz, 3.5 GHz, 4.4 GHz and 4.9 GHz and 5.8 GHz, ensuring telecom operators, enterprises and governments can purchase the same product and have it operate the same way in any available spectrum.



“Now in the U.S., Redline is bringing this high performance sub-700 MHz technology and new spectrum filtering to the unlicensed White Spaces spectrum” she continued. “As we noted in our recent report ‘White Space: Opening the Door to a New Spectrum Usage Paradigm’ White Space Spectrum is especially abundant in Rural Areas and can finally bring Digital Broadband to underserved remote markets. Redline’s frequency and protocol-agnostic approach now addresses these rural broadband needs for M2M, networking, VoIP, video surveillance and other mission critical applications at significantly greater range and with faster speeds than alternate white space technologies - dramatically reducing the number of base stations required for coverage. Redline theoretically requires as little as 1/6 the number of towers as LTE to cover the same area.”
