Viavi Solutions has introduced a new optical connector inspection solution aimed at next-generation transceivers.

The FVAM-2000, the latest in the company’s benchtop microscopy range, will be showcased alongside VIAVI’s latest optical and Ethernet testing solutions at ECOC 2024, taking place in Frankfurt from 23-25 September. ECOC is one of Europe’s largest exhibition dedicated to optical communication technology.

With the rise of parallel optic connectors, such as multi-fibre push-on (MPO), new advanced testing methods are required to simplify processes in manufacturing. The FVAM-2000 is designed to address this need, supporting MPO and new bulkhead connectors used in 800G formats like the octal small form-factor pluggable (OSFP) and quad small form-factor pluggable (QSFP). It features an innovative connector interface that is easy to attach and change, making it suitable for bulkhead-type devices. Powered by the VIAVI next-generation panoptic microscope engine, it delivers brighter, higher-contrast images with faster panning performance. Additionally, the FVAM-2000 includes an advanced automation framework for seamless integration into PC-driven workflows, ideal for high-volume manufacturing environments.

VIAVI will also demonstrate its recently launched ONE-1600, a 1.6Tb/s Ethernet test module that addresses the validation needs of the growing 1.6Tb/s ecosystem. The ONE-1600 is part of the expanding ONE LabPro platform, offering a web-based interface that integrates physical layer insights with multi-port, multi-flow Layer 2/3 testing across multiple data rates. It supports applications such as AI, machine learning, quantum computing, and high-performance computing.

"As the industry accelerates towards 1.6T speeds, Genuine Optics is proud to be at the forefront, delivering high-performance optical transceivers that unlock new possibilities for data centres and AI applications,” said Jim Theodoras, Vice President of Research and Development, Genuine Optics. “Our partnership with VIAVI has been instrumental in driving this innovation forward, ensuring seamless testing and verification of our 1.6T solutions. With this milestone, we're not only setting a new standard for speed but also paving the way for the next wave of technological advancements."

VIAVI’s ONT-800 Optical Network Testing platform will also be on display, featuring demonstrations of its ZR and ZR+ capable ONT 800G Flex XPM Module. The ONT will be used by Coherent and InnoLight at ECOC to showcase the performance of their latest technologies. Coherent will use the ONT to validate its 800G-DR4 transceiver, while InnoLight will demonstrate its 800G ZR OSFP and 400G ZR DCO high-power transceivers.

“VIAVI is proud to showcase our newest innovations at ECOC 2024 as we continue to invest in and improve our industry-standard platforms,” added Tom Fawcett, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Lab & Production, VIAVI. “We are again pleased by the number of customers using our testing solutions in their own displays to validate their latest technologies.”

At ECOC, VIAVI will also present:

  • The Full Band Optical Spectrum Analyzer (mOSA) and High-Density Optical Power Meter (mOPM-C2B) modules, part of the MAP (Multiple Application Platform) product line, offering compact and high-density solutions
  • NITRO Fiber Sensing, an integrated real-time asset monitoring and analytics solution designed for critical infrastructure, including data centre interconnects and telecommunications networks
  • The INX 760, a fully automated probe microscope, offering the fastest inspection and analysis of single, duplex, and multi-fibre connectors in hyperscale data centres, metro core construction, and telecommunications distribution
