Transceivers offer indefinite life at high voltage
Isolated bus transceivers, which are claimed to be world’s smallest, have been released by NVE. The company has released the 16-pin QSOP CAN transceiver and RS-485 transceiver, claiming that both are 25% the size of competing devices. The IL41050TA-1E CAN transceiver operates between -40 to +125°C and features a 1Mb/s data rate.
The IL41050TA-1E transceiver provides a 180ns typical loop delay and 12mA quiescent supply current (recessive). Operating from a -40 to +85ºC temperature range, the IL3085-1E RS-485 transceiver features up to 4Mb/s data rate and 3mA typical controller-side quiescent current. The transceiver, which meets ANSI RS-485 and ISO 8482:1987(E) industry standards, is offered with 5kV bus ESD protection, current limiting and thermal shutdown features.
Both transceivers are rated at 600 working volts under IEC 60747-5-5 (VDE 0884) and 2500V under UL 1577. Unlike optocouplers or other isolation technologies, the company boasts that both devices have an indefinite life at high voltage. Both transceivers are available now and sold in quantities of 1,000. The IL41050TA-1E is priced at $2.33 and the IL3085-1E at $2.60.
Evaluation boards, which provide isolated network nodes with reference design practices, are available for both transceivers. For easy connections, the boards include termination resistors and screw terminals. A RJ45 RS-485 bus is also included on the IL3085-1E board. The IL41050-1A board is priced at $49.95 and the IL3085-1A board at $74.95.
