Quad port 40GbE gearbox PHY is an 'industry first'
A quad port 40GbE gearbox PHY, claimed to be an industry first, has been introduced by Broadcom. The BCM82764, which operates alongside the company's StrataXGS, converts 20Gb/s signals to multiple lanes running at 10Gb/s. By using the high density PHY, users can provide 40GbE ports while using the full bandwidth of the switch.
The PHY, which is 28nm, utilises eight system-side and 16 line-side differential, high performance I/Os with transmit and receive equalisation. This provides longer channel lengths and improved jitter performance. The BCM82764 is fully-compliant to many widely used 40G Ethernet PMDs, including CR4, LR4 and SR4 links.
"The introduction of Broadcom's StrataXGS Tomahawk Switch series and companion quad-port gearbox PHY once again demonstrates our ability to bring a cohesive solution to market," said Rajiv Ramaswami, Executive Vice President and General Manager, Infrastructure & Networking Group, Broadcom. "Our 40G Ethernet gearbox facilitates extremely large switch radixes while using minimal power and real estate, providing a very attractive option for system designers developing next generation cloud scale networking equipment."
