Maxim has introduced the MAX3986, a 1Gbps to 10.3Gbps, quad linear equalizer for copper interconnects. A high-performance, stand-alone equalizer, this device offers best-in-class port matching (typical return loss is 24dB) and channel-to-channel isolation (33dB, typ). Each channel is capable of compensating for losses in 20 inches of FR4, with data rates up to 10.3Gbps.
Moreover, the MAX3986 is the industry's first stand-alone equalizer that can also be used to extend the reach of limiting equalizers and decision feedback equalizers (DFEs), commonly found integrated into serializers/deserializers (SerDes) and ASICs. The expanded linear range of the MAX3986 preserves the essential signal characteristics needed for optimum DFE performance. The MAX3986 can be used in SDR, DDR, and QDR InfiniBand(R); SDR and DDR IEEE(R) 803.3ae XAUI; 8.5Gbps Fibre Channel; and serial 10.3Gbps Ethernet applications for backplanes and copper cable assemblies.

The MAX3986 operates from a 3.3V supply. This device is packaged in a 5mm x 7mm, 38-pin TQFN package, and has a pinout designed to minimize board space and optimize high-speed signal routing. The MAX3986 is fully specified over the 0 degrees Celsius to +85 degrees Celsius temperature range. Prices start at $20.45 (1000-up, FOB USA).

An evaluation board that allows exercise of all channels is available. Please contact the factory for details.
