Mobile edge computing solution suits outdoor environments
ADLINK Technology and Saguna have announced a joint Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) solution designed for deployments in harsh outdoor environments. As MEC gains momentum, and new trials and live deployments are underway, the need for robust, no-fault equipment increases. Bringing the Internet closer to users and the things of the IoT requires MEC platforms to be deployed at the edge of the Radio Access Network (RAN), which is often in harsh outdoor environments.
Saguna and ADLINK integrated solution addresses this market need for rugged, outdoor deployments. The joint solution is comprised of Saguna Open-RAN, an advanced and fully virtualised MEC platform, operating on ADLINK’s rugged SETO-1000 extreme outdoor server platform designed for extreme conditions. The joint solution is compact, cost-effective and easy-to-install. By co-locating the MEC infrastructure with existing network real estate, mobile operators can reduce costs while delivering new services and improving network performance.
“I am excited that together, ADLINK and Saguna are bringing to market the first outdoor MEC solution featuring ADLINK’s SETO-1000 and Saguna’s advanced MEC software platform,” said Yong Luo, General Manager, ADLINK's Embedded Computing Product Segment. “ADLINK's SETO-1000 is an advanced edge computing solution that enables telecomm carriers to reduce back-haul and transmission costs. It also provides smoother and faster delivery for application providers, as well as a faster web browser response experience for end users.”
Commenting on the integration, Danny Frydman, CTO, Saguna said, “Our work with ADLINK resulted in a highly effective solution that answers a real market need for mobile operators. This ruggedised MEC platform accelerates the adoption of MEC and offers the low-latency support required by IoT and Tactile Internet applications.”
The companies will present their MEC solution with CIMAGINE, a leading augmented reality visualisation platform, running on the Saguna Open-RAN MEC platform and ADLINK SETO-1000 at the upcoming Mobile World Congress. The demo will feature CIMAGINE’s augmented reality platform, in which furniture shoppers can see exactly how the furniture they want may look placed in their home. It demonstrates how MEC capabilities can drive e-commerce with a superior user experience enhancing personalised online shopping.
Mobile World Congress will take place in Barcelona, Spain, scheduled for February 22nd-25th, 2016. The demonstrations will be held at Saguna’s booth 5C81.
