A provider of Intelligent Transport Networks, Infinera, has announced that Yahoo! JAPAN, a Japanese internet company, deployed the Infinera Cloud Xpress to interconnect its data centres in Osaka. The Cloud Xpress enables Yahoo! JAPAN to interconnect data centres with hyper-scale density, operational simplicity and low power consumption to deliver internet services to its customers.

Yahoo! JAPAN is one of the largest and most innovative internet portal sites in Japan. Due to increased internet traffic demands from both residential and business services, Yahoo! JAPAN has experienced growth in key cities like Tokyo and Osaka, driving the need for more capacity between its data centre facilities.

Working closely with Infinera partner ITOCHU Techno-Solutions Corporation, Yahoo! JAPAN deployed the Infinera Cloud Xpress to address the need for more capacity. ITOCHU Techno-Solutions Corporation provides Yahoo! JAPAN information technology solutions and data centre maintenance services. Yahoo! JAPAN has now deployed the Cloud Xpress and Infinera XTM series in its metro networks.

With the Cloud Xpress, Yahoo! JAPAN benefits from Infinera’s unique photonic integrated circuit technology which delivers a 500Gb/s super-channel over 150km without additional multiplexers and amplifiers. The Cloud Xpress incorporates Infinera’s Instant Bandwidth technology to allow customers to software-activate line-side bandwidth in 100Gb/s increments as and when needed, closely matching their end-customer demands. In addition, the Cloud Xpress is designed for plug-and-play installation with simplified provisioning and support for data centre automation using open Software Defined Networking (SDN) Application Programming Interfaces (APIs).

“Yahoo! JAPAN's data centres house a large number of servers so both space and power are limited,” said Ms. Miyuki Tsunekawa, Backbone, Site Operations Division at Yahoo! JAPAN. “The Infinera Cloud Xpress enables the easy deployment of 100Gb/s capacity in a compact solution with low power consumption, ideally suited for our data centre environment.”

“Yahoo! JAPAN's deployment of the Cloud Xpress is made possible by the collaboration of our partner ITOCHU Techno-Solutions Corporation, offering its customers the best solutions for data centre interconnect as DCI applications become more pervasive across the globe,” said Andrew Bond-Webster, Vice President, Regional Sales APAC at Infinera. “The compact design, ease of use and scalability of Cloud Xpress and the XTM Series stand out in metro data centre interconnect applications where data centre operators need to grow capacity rapidly while minimising the cost of space and power.”

The Infinera Cloud Xpress Family is designed to deliver cloud-optimised wavelength division multiplexing solutions to cloud service providers, internet content providers, Internet Exchange service providers, enterprise and other large-scale data centre operators. The Cloud Xpress Family offers customers the choice of 10, 40 and 100GbE client interfaces to meet their specific requirements. Infinera recently introduced the Cloud Xpress 2 based on the Infinite Capacity Engine, scheduled to be available in the first quarter of 2017.
