VGA Port Protector Integrates Level Shifting, Buffering, and ESD Protection
Maxim has introduced the MAX4895E, a complete VGA port protector IC designed to interface between a video graphics controller and VGA port connector. This device integrates HSYNC/VSYNC level-shifting buffers to ensure full compatibility with VESA VSIS specifications. Additionally, it includes robust ESD protection on all seven VGA video outputs. This high level of integration allows the MAX4895E to eliminate the need for the multiple analog and passive components required by discrete implementations, thus saving space and cost. A compact, single-chip solution, the MAX4895E is ideal for use in notebook PCs, desktop computers, servers, and consumer video applications.
MaxiThis VGA interface solution integrates level-shifting buffers to support low-voltage CMOS or standard TTL-compatible graphics controllers. The MAX4895E also features I2C level shifting using two nMOS devices. All video outputs are characterized for ±15kV (Human Body Model) and ±8kV (IEC 61000-4-2 Contact Discharge) ESD protection. The device features low capacitance (3pF, max) on the RGB terminals, as well as low quiescent current (5microamps, max) for high-bandwidth applications that require low power consumption.
The MAX4895E operates from a single +5.0V supply, and is fully specified over the -40 degrees Celsius to +85 degrees Celsius extended temperature range. It is available in a small, 3mm x 3mm, 16-pin TQFN with prices starting at $0.68 (1000-up, FOB USA).
