Napatech today announced the availability of on-board IEEE1588 PTP (Precision Time Protocol) support on Napatech 1 Gbps and 10 Gbps intelligent network adapters. This will allow Napatech customers to synchronize appliances using Napatech intelligent network adapters to an IEEE1588 PTP master or to use Napatech network adapters as an IEEE15888 PTP master for other systems.
This announcement follows the recent launch of the Napatech Time Synchronization Endpoint (NTTSE) product, which provides retrofitted support for IEEE15888 PTP time synchronization for existing Napatech network adapter installations.

“With the NTTSE and the announced support for on-board IEEE1588 PTP on our 1 Gbps and 10 Gbps network adapters, we can now offer a comprehensive solution to our OEM vendor customers that both supports existing and future installations”, stated Henrik Brill Jensen, CEO Napatech. “IEEE1588 PTP is growing in importance as it provides an effective means of distributing time synchronization information in locations where it is otherwise cost prohibitive or impractical to install GPS antennae”.

The IEEE1588v2 PTP time synchronization protocol is based on a hierarchical master-slave configuration allowing multiple devices to synchronize clocks over a distributed packet-based network. Synchronization messages exchanged between the PTP master and slave include nanosecond time-stamps that allow the PTP slaves to adjust their clock frequencies to compensate for delay in the network and thereby provide an accurate time of day clock reference.

Existing Napatech intelligent network adapters use time synchronization to support nanosecond precision time-stamping of captured packets, which enables precise merging of data from multiple ports and adapters in the same appliance as well as supporting accurate network monitoring analysis and troubleshooting as well as precise latency measurement.

The recently announced refresh of Napatech 4x1 Gbps products will include on-board IEEE1588 PTP support. In addition, on-board IEEE1588 PTP support will be provided in a 2x10 Gbps product variant.

The new on-board IEEE1588v2 PTP products are planned for release in Q4 2012.
