The SmartMX product family from NXP Semiconductor has been selected for Ecuador’s new eID program. Working in close partnership with Ecuador's official secure document printer, Instituto Geográfico Militar del Ecuador (IGM), NXP has helped the country bring secure and multi-function national identification cards to its citizens, and has established a deep understanding of the technology, enabling future updates to be implemented efficiently.

The Smart MX family uses NXP’s Integral Security architecture, which has over 100 security features and combines powerful co-processors for the highest levels of performance.

With a population of over 15 million, Ecuador is able to deploy a number of digital public services to private citizens and businesses. Besides being used for traditional identification, the eID cards will also enable citizens to travel inside the Andean Community, perform electronic signature operations and access benefit and welfare services provided by the state. The eID program also focusses on establishing digital core competencies in Ecuador, for the continued development of digital services. IGM, through close collaboration with NXP, is now also able to manage and drive the creation of electronic security documents, including electronic passports.

“The new eID program in Ecuador is one of the most ambitious and sophisticated programs we have seen in Latin America and we are proud to support them in their vision for enhanced access to services for their citizens. With over 100 countries using SmartMX technology for their electronic ID documents, our experience in this field is second to none - a fact clearly recognised by IGM who selected us as their technology partner for both eID and Passport,” declared Stefan Barbu, Head of Secure ID Solutions for the Americas, NXP Semiconductors. “We are extremely impressed with the quality of work performed by the IGM. This project is a real example of how, when knowledge is shared and a common goal identified, great results can be achieved.”

Ramiro Pazmiño, deputy director, Instituto Geográfico Militar del Ecuador, added, “Implementing any type of eID program is a real challenge, from understanding the technology to reaching agreements with different government entities in order to roll out services. In line with our Government’s policy to empower Ecuador’s industry and to produce goods, rather than acquire them abroad, our institution has been mandated by the President to take this challenge and establish this core competency in Ecuador. In these scenarios a true partnership is needed and NXP clearly contributed to our success. NXP’s ability to provide us with the highest levels of technical training and support in building a complete solution has helped us achieve our goal to produce in our facilities a state-of-the-art, secure, multi-function electronic ID card for the citizens of Ecuador.”
