Provertha is expanding its range of circular connectors with the introduction of the new M12 Ruggedised connector series, available in both straight and angled versions for PCB mounting via Surface Mount Technology (SMT).

These Ruggedised connectors, offered in either shielded or unshielded options, feature a robust design with large-area SMT connections and a specialised contact layout.

Provertha's extensive portfolio is designed to cater to specific application needs, providing a wide variety of products in common codings and installation heights under the company’s motto, 'Fitting Your Application'.

The new Ruggedised design addresses customer demands for high reliability, with a unique contact geometry that ensures secure connections. The connectors are engineered for optimal routing on the PCB, allowing conductor tracks to be routed horizontally or vertically from all four sides of the connector. With IP67 protection, these connectors are built for reliable performance even under harsh conditions, such as vibration or shock, complying with IEC 61076-2-101 and -109 standards. They also operate within a broad temperature range from -40°C to +125°C (excluding the O-ring).

The straight connector offers the market's lowest insertion height at just 16mm, with versatile routing options in four directions on the PCB. The Ruggedised connectors align with the trend towards miniaturisation, featuring D-code and X-code versions for Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet switches, and A-code versions for I/O boxes. These connectors are ideal for compact devices, providing significant space savings. Additionally, Provertha’s new tamper-proof M12 installation housing, available with push-pull or screw-locking options, enables close-spacing of interfaces.

The Ruggedised connectors are designed for efficient integration into automated SMT processes, with high-temperature-resistant pick-and-place pads and tape-and-reel packaging. Their narrow tape format allows them to be easily handled by feeder banks on placement machines, taking up minimal space. The low profile and fully symmetrical design of the connectors reduce the risk of soldering angle errors during assembly.

Featuring standard codings (A, B, D, and X), the Ruggedised connectors are suitable for a variety of applications, including sensor/actuator systems in industrial automation, industrial Ethernet networks, and railway systems. The connectors also offer adjustable insulator positions with eight coding directions selectable in 45° increments, making them particularly useful for angled cable connectors where the orientation of the cable outlet can be tailored to the specific application. Two positioning pins ensure accurate placement and orientation during assembly.

The M12 Ruggedised connectors are built with high-performance thermoplastic, offering excellent heat resistance and electrical tracking properties, with a Comparative Tracking Index (CTI) value exceeding 600.

The design of these connectors has been refined following an in-depth analysis of competitors, resulting in superior mechanical features. The fully symmetrical layout ensures high stability by effectively absorbing lateral forces. Four large soldering surfaces on the mounting brackets provide excellent resistance to twisting, especially for angled connectors.

A key aspect of the Ruggedised series is the elastic contact design and larger SMT connections, which, together with the geometry of the mounting brackets and four large connection pads, allow the connectors to withstand high transverse and shear forces. This ensures a high level of functional reliability, preventing SMT connections from breaking under heavy strain.
