Molex has announced its Optical Industrial Assemblies and Adapters (Receptacles), which are claimed to be the first of their kind to offer connections with a ruggedised metal housing for demanding applications. The assemblies are rated for NEMA 6P and hold IP67-rating for dust and moisture protection. In addition to the metal housings for outdoor applications, plastic housings are available for indoor or weight-sensitive applications.

The industry-standard (ODVA compliant) plug and receptacle connector are utilised to ensure performance and compatibility with other compliant connector systems and mate directly to any manufacturer’s small form-factor pluggable active device by way of a 3-axis internal LC connector float.

Molex evaluated the changing needs of device designers when developing the new interconnect systems. Due to decreasing box sizes, many designers are now placing the transceiver cage on the board edge, where the outside cable assembly can be mated directly into the active device.

With the incorporated X-, Y- and Z-axis float of the internal LC connector, the Molex interconnect system can accept multiple device options while maintaining connectivity integrity. The Molex Optical Industrial Assemblies and Adapters (Receptacles) with metal housings are tightly sealed at both the panel cut-out and plug-to- receptacle interface, making them ruggedised for outdoor conditions. The metal-body connector housings have been tested to GR-486: salt and fog exposure for extreme elements, which ensures they can withstand a variety of harsh environments. Also, sealed panel feed-through design versions have the retaining jam nut located inside or outside of the enclosure, which simplifies installation and provides tamper-proof and environmental protection. In addition, they can operate over a temperature range from -40 to +85°C, making them compatible with outdoor as well as indoor applications.

Mark Matus, Global Product Manager, Molex, commented: “Our Optical Industrial Assemblies and Adapters (Receptacles) with metal housings are ideal for harsh-environment applications. They are a perfect fit for designers of wired and wireless communication equipment, fixed communication tower links, rugged test equipment, security systems and other harsh-environment applications.”
