Lensed MT Ferrule-based Interconnect from Molex
Molex Incorporated introduces the industry's first high-density lensed MT ferrule-based interconnect, designed to reduce optical loss resulting from dust contamination. Traditional lensed or expanded beam interfaces have been available as single fibre interfaces with limited density. Meeting the same dimensional requirements as standard MT ferrule interfaces, the Molex lensed 12-fibre MT ferrule contains 12 parallel micro-lens interfaces, optimised for 50/125µm fibre applications.
Standard MT ferrule interfaces transmit light across a 50/125µm glass-fibre interface, making the interface susceptible to optical-performance degradation due to dust contamination. The Molex lensed MT connector increases the optical path by 5 times, therefore limiting the transmission loss effects of the typical debris particle sizes found in optical connectors. Optical loss due to debris is significantly minimised, ensuring a repeatable optical performance and quicker installation time.
In addition, the non-contacting interface virtually eliminates damage or performance degradation caused by high-mating cycles or debris. Traditional MT ferrule-based connectors require the installer to spend time inspecting and cleaning the optical interface prior to mating; the Molex lensed MT simplifies the cleaning with a simple air blast, providing a low-insertion loss across all 12 channels.
Since the lensed MT ferrule meets the same dimensional requirements as the standard MT ferrule, it can be used in all 12-fibre MT compatible interfaces. High-density front panel interfaces include the MPO/MTP*, Molex Array and Circular MT connectors. The use of the lensed MT ferrule-based interconnect is also an ideal solution for hard-to-clean backplane applications using the HBMT™ (High Density Backplane MT) or BMTP (Backplane MTP) connector systems.
