An online design tool that enables test engineers to custom-build their own virtual mixed-signal connector is available at www.charcroft.com.
Starting with a blank connector shell, the "Configurator" allows designers to select from a range of plug and receptacle frames with different mounting options and backshells, then populate their chosen frame by clicking on individual contact modules from Hypertac’s H series connectors.

As each module is added the virtual connector is ‘built’ on-screen. The connector can be amended and alternative modules substituted until the virtual build is complete and a custom build list and unique part number is generated on-screen.

Module diagrams, together with a description and height, make it easy to view and select from the range of available modules, and data for each module can be displayed in a pop-up screen. An icon against each module highlights which are available with Charcroft’s Express 48-hour delivery. The current Beta version will be followed later with a 3D version with online pricing.

Charcroft’s connector specialist, Gary Nelson, explained, ‘Test engineers often need custom connectors but rarely have the luxury of selecting them due to extended leadtimes. The combination of Charcroft’s online Connector Configurator and the option of 48-hour Precision Express Delivery on many modules makes significant savings in the time spent specifying a custom module and waiting for delivery.’

Hypertac’s H series offers signal, power, coax, high voltage or shielded modules from 2-way to 45-way and up to 50 Amps. They offer 12 different plug styles, 13 frame sizes from 7 to 55, 10 receptacles and 10 different module types with varying pin styles and a half-turn locking option. The connectors are suitable for rack and panel, cable and programming applications.
