The OpenAI GPT Store, after a set of delays, has finally launched, an online marketplace which allows users to both discover and purchase, as well as design and sell GPT models.

Despite being announced back in November of 2023, the official release happened January 10th 2024, defining OpenAI’s position in the start of the new year. Since the announcement, users have been building their GPTs and sharing for others to use, utilising third-party sites like AIPRM to promote their creations. Now, OpenAI has rolled out the official GPT Store to bring these builder-creations in-house, with ChatGPT Plus, Team, and Enterprise users given first access. From this marketplace, these users can find useful and popular GPTs readily for all sorts of uses, need a code assistant, personal writer, or just a homework helper? There are custom-built GPTs for all of those and a whole lot more.

GPT Store features

The GPT Store also comes packed with a plethora of additional features to amplify the experience and boost creativity. A store trending page will constantly update to feature a diverse range of the hottest new GPT models developed by OpenAI partners and its community. A community leaderboard will show the best of the communities' creations, separated generally into categories such as writing, research, art with DALL-E, education, programming, and lifestyle.

Each week, OpenAI will update the store with a new set of featured GPTs for you to tinker and test with. Generally speaking, these GPTs will all be ones they feel bring impact and usefulness to its user-base. The first line-up of featured GPTs cover a wide range from lifestyle to AI tutoring:

  • AllTrails gives users trail recommendations based on location, time, weather, and more.
  • Consensus is making academic research easier with the ability to search and synthesise the results of over 200 million academic papers.
  • Code Tutor, from Khan Academy, is teaching users the fundamentals of code and beyond.
  • Canva is boosting creativity allowing users to design presentations of social posts.
  • Books does exactly what it says on the tin, giving user book recommendations based on their preferences.
  • CK-12 Flexi, the AI tutor, is making maths and science accessible anytime, anywhere.

GPT Store for the individual

The GPT Store is writhe with opportunity for the individual, allowing users to build their very own GPT, being as simple as talking to a creator bot, all the way to a highly customised and personally coded chat bot. Once a GPT is created, users can then choose what they desire to do with it, using it privately, sharing it privately with a link, or sharing it with everyone in the community.

Additionally, users can be rewarded for their successful GPTs, earning money based on GPT usage. In Q1, OpenAI will be launching its GPT builder revenue programme, rolling out this new system for the US market first. These users will be paid based on user engagement with the GPTs they have built. Criteria and specifications on this pay model will be released as OpenAI get closer to the time of launch.

GPT Store for the team

A part of this new update is the all-new ChatGPT Team plan for teams of 2 all the way to teams of hundreds. GPT Team users will get access to a unique section of the GPT Store which will include specific GPTs published securely to a workspace. The GPT Store is also set to launch shortly for ChatGPT Enterprise customers. It will offer advanced administrative controls, including options for managing the sharing of internal-only GPTs and selecting which external GPTs can be utilised within a business. As with all activity on ChatGPT Team and Enterprise, conversations with GPTs are not utilised to enhance OpenAI’s chatbot models, to ensure privacy.
